MASQUE THING

Masque Thing is a cabinet of curious qualities, figural legs, and stretchy skin

Masque Thing is a cabinet of curious qualities that can’t quite be contained. Measuring at eighteen feet, the piece was commissioned for an art collector's apartment to display ceramics and everyday bric-a-brac. But like so much of contemporary life, ordinary things are not always what they seem. Inspired by the figural drawings of Inigo Jone’s English masques, postured legs peek through. Skinned in a deceptive silicone, the doors mimic the stone terrazzo used in other areas. When tugging on the brass nipple hardware, the stone-like surface unexpectedly stretches like supple skin. The cabinet’s figural and material invention give pleasure to the ordinary routines and micro-movements of everyday life.
