STONEBARN MEDITATION CAMP

A renovation of a stonebarn combines incompatible silhouettes into an elusive whole.

MEDITATION CAMP transforms an unremarkable stone barn into a meditation retreat. Our design abstracts this found generic, a stone rectangle with a gabled tin roof, into a composite of shifty silhouettes, presenting seemingly incommensurate shapes from each vantage point. Rudolf Arnheim argues that the perception of shape is always of a kind of shape and tells us the nature of its contents by its external appearance. In this case, shape and typology are miscues, indicating an elusive whole.
